If your upper lash line curves down at the outer corner, you likely have downturned eyes. And honestly? It’s such a classic, soft eye shape (hello old-Hollywood vibes like Sydney Sweeney / Marilyn Monroe energy), but most of the “standard” eyeliner and eyeshadow tutorials are made for naturally upturned eyes… so when you copy them, the result can look heavier instead of lifted.

I used to do my liner the “normal” way and then stare at the mirror like: umm what did I do wrong 🥲 Because somehow my eyes looked smaller and more droopy the more I tried to “fix” them.

So here’s the downturned eye saga… but the version that actually makes the eyes look prettier, more awake, and subtly snatched without changing your whole face.

Step 1: Make sure it’s actually downturned (quick mirror check)

This takes 10 seconds and saves so much frustration.

Mirror test: Look straight ahead (not tilting your chin). Imagine a straight line going through the center of your pupil. Now check your outer corners. If the outer corner sits below that imaginary line, you’re in the downturned club.

Bonus: you can still be downturned AND have another feature like hooded, deep set, round, or close set. That combo is why one hack works for your friend and not for you.

My biggest mindset shift: there is no “right way”

I need to say this clearly because it changed everything for me: there is no right or wrong way to do eyeshadow or eyeliner. The goal is balance and symmetry with the eyes you already have. Not “fixing” them, not forcing them into a totally different shape.

Downturned eyes can look dreamy, romantic, and expensive when the makeup supports the natural shape instead of fighting it.

The #1 rule for downturned eyes: pull everything up (but not in a harsh way)

If you only remember one thing: your blending direction matters more than the color.

Instead of blending outward and slightly down (which is what happens naturally when you follow the lower lash line), you want to pull the eyeshadow up at an angle toward the temple. Think “lift” not “drag.”

Even if you’re doing a soft brown look, that angle is what creates the illusion that the outer corner is higher.

Eyeshadow map that lifts (beginner-friendly)

I’m going to describe this like a simple placement guide you can repeat with any palette.

1) Base shade to smooth everything

Start with a light neutral shade close to your skin tone. This just helps blending look seamless, especially if you’re hooded too.

2) Mid-tone slightly ABOVE the crease (especially if hooded)

If you have hooded downturned eyes, the crease can hide your work. So place your mid-tone shade just above the crease where it’s still visible when your eyes are open.

Blend it outward and upward toward the temple. Not straight out. Not down.

3) Outer corner depth, but keep it “higher” than you think

Here’s the trick: don’t put the darkest shade low on the outer corner. That’s the fastest way to make the eye look more downturned.

Place the deeper shade on the outer third of the lid and slightly into the outer crease area, then blend it up so the darkest point sits a little higher than your natural outer corner.

If you want a more dramatic effect, you can do an exaggerated contour placement (just for learning): place the shadow a bit higher than feels “logical,” then blend until it looks natural. This is one of the easiest ways to see how shadowing can create the illusion of lift.

4) Bright inner corner = instant “prettier” effect

A soft highlight or light shimmer on the inner corner makes downturned eyes look more awake and open. Keep it clean and targeted (not all over the inner lid).

Ok but the way a tiny angle change can lift the whole eye… absolutely shook.

Most people do liner by following the upper lash line and extending it straight out. On downturned eyes, that can pull the eye down even more.

My go-to “anti-droop” liner method

Step A: Tightline or press liner into the upper lashes first. Keep it thin.

Step B: Stop the liner around the outer third and start angling it upward toward the tail of the brow (not toward the end of the eye).

Step C: Create a tiny “flick” first, then connect back to the lash line. Keep the wing short but lifted.

Step D: Keep the lower lash line clean or softly smoked only on the outer third, and blend it upward to meet the wing. This creates one continuous lifted direction.

Common eyeliner mistake (that I did for YEARS)

Dragging the wing from the very outer corner downward because “that’s where my eye goes.” If your outer corner points down, copying that direction will always look heavier. Instead, you’re basically drawing the outer corner where you want it to appear.

What about the lower lash line?

If you love under-eye makeup, you can still do it—just be strategic.

Do: keep shading on the outer third and blend upward.

Don’t: heavily line the entire lower lash line in a dark color, especially if your eyes are also round or slightly close set. It can shrink the eye and emphasize downturn.

Aegyosal + downturned eyes (why it sometimes looks “off”)

If you’ve ever tried Korean-style under-eye fullness (aegyosal) and thought, “umm what did I do wrong 🥲” you’re not alone.

On downturned eyes, placing the shadow for aegyosal too low or too dark can create a tired shadow instead of a cute under-eye puff.

My aegyosal placement fix

1) Smile slightly to find the natural under-eye puff.

2) Use a very soft, neutral shadow to sketch the line close to the lash line (not halfway down the cheek).

3) Add a tiny highlight on the fullest part, but keep it subtle.

4) Blend the outer under-eye shading upward so it supports the lifted outer corner, not the downward curve.

If you want the fastest “lift” without doing a dramatic liner: lash placement is everything.

The idea behind a fox-style lash map is to create length and emphasis on the outer area, but placed in a way that pulls up rather than droops.

How to place lashes so the eye looks lifted

Option 1: Clusters (my fave for control)

Place shorter clusters on the inner corner, then gradually longer toward the outer third. But here’s the key: don’t put the longest cluster on the very last outer corner if your eye turns down a lot. Put the longest piece slightly before the outermost edge, then finish with a slightly shorter one at the very end. That creates a lifted “peak.”

Option 2: Strip lashes

Choose a style that has a lifted outer flare, but not one that droops downward at the end. When applying, angle the outer edge slightly upward while the glue sets (just a few seconds makes a difference).

• Don’t drag eyeliner downward following the natural corner.

• Don’t place the darkest shadow low on the outer corner.

• Don’t heavily line the full lower lash line in dark shades if you want lift.

• Don’t overdo aegyosal shading too low or too cool-toned (it can read as tired).

If your eyes are downturned AND wide set / close set

This is where tiny tweaks make your look feel custom.

Downturned + wide set

If the space between your eyes feels wider than one eyeball width, you can subtly bring them closer by adding a bit more depth toward the inner lid (not super dark, just slightly deeper than your base). Keep inner-corner highlight precise so it doesn’t widen the spacing even more.

Downturned + close set

If your eyes feel closer than one eyeball width, keep the inner corner lighter and cleaner. Focus your depth and liner lift on the outer third to elongate. A tiny outward-angled wing helps a lot here.

Soft glam inspo: the “classic bombshell” lift

If you love that Marilyn Monroe / modern bombshell vibe, downturned eyes can look unreal with soft smoked shadow and a lifted liner. The key is keeping the smoke controlled and angled upward, not dragging down.

Try a neutral smokey shade on the lid and crease, then a clean lifted line that creates symmetry. It’s giving romantic, not tired.
